Post subject: International E- commerce Considerations?
PostPosted: Thu Dec 22, 2005 9:49 am

Points:
I'm a bit new to international e-commerce. And I just sum up things that should be put into considerations:

1. Credit card processing - Probably need to check with our merchant account provider. My guess is that they if they have a Visa/Mastercard/Amex then they should be able to use it on our site.

2. Being able to handle international addresses - I'm guessing that if we're accepting foreign transactions we'll want to have something set up to allow customers to enter an international address into our system. Are there any general guidelines as to how to best implement this?

I think that's probably it. We don't need to worry about shipping as we're talking downloads and I don't think taxation is an issue either. Potential piracy is an issue but that's probably best left to a separate thread.

Is there anything else ?

1. Some banks may block Internet purchases, but I'm not sure. I know for sure there are banks out there who will let their customers decide an amount and then get a temporary card number for Internet purchases. Once the card number has been used on one site it can't be used any more.

2. International addresses can be a problem, but you can get around it by adding 4 text fields for the address (ie no field for state). That way the users can write their addresses as they like. Since you don't have to ship anything I suggest you use for example ClickBank.com or 2checkout.com for credit card processing. They also accept cheques and Clickbank can even accept PayPal payments.
